To block Telegram on a Mac you have to cover two things: the Telegram desktop app and the Telegram Web site at web.telegram.org. For the app, set an App Limit in Apple Screen Time or use a focus app that blocks apps, such as Nudge. For the website, add web.telegram.org to the hosts file or to a Nudge preset, along with webk.telegram.org and weba.telegram.org, which load the same web clients. If you want Telegram closed only while you work, Nudge blocks the apps and websites you pick during a session, with websites blocked in Safari and Chrome.

How do these apps compare?

Block both the Telegram desktop app and Telegram Web on a Mac, and choose the method by what it actually covers.

Do you need to block the Telegram app or Telegram Web?

Both, if you use both. Telegram offers more than one way in on a Mac: the native Telegram for macOS app (also on the Mac App Store), the Telegram Desktop client from desktop.telegram.org (its Mac App Store version is called Telegram Lite), and web clients at web.telegram.org. Blocking one does not block the others.

A website block (hosts file, browser extension) stops the browser version. It may or may not stop the desktop apps, because they talk to Telegram's servers directly, and Telegram does not publish a hostname list for them. Do not rely on a hosts entry to block an app, and do not add guessed domains. Block each installed app as an app, block the Telegram Web addresses as websites, then test.

Which method should you use to block Telegram?

Use Screen Time App Limits for a free cap on the app, the hosts file for a quick block of Telegram Web, and Nudge when you want both the app and the website blocked for the length of a session. For the general app method, see how to block apps on a Mac.

How do you block the Telegram app with Screen Time App Limits?

Screen Time can limit how long an app is used per day. On macOS 26 and earlier, App Limits set limits for specific apps, app categories and websites. On macOS 27, Apple's guide sets Time Allowances by app category, such as Social Media, so you may need to limit the whole category Telegram is in. A limit caps use; it does not remove the app.

  • When the time is up, macOS shows a prompt that the person at the keyboard can usually dismiss with an extra allowance unless a Screen Time passcode is set. It limits time; it does not stop you opening Telegram at the start of a work session. For a block that starts when a session starts, use a focus app.
  1. Click the Apple menu, open System Settings and click Screen Time in the sidebar (you may need to scroll). Turn it on if needed.

  2. Open App Limits (on macOS 27, Time Allowances).

  3. Add a limit and choose the Telegram app from the list of apps, or its category if you want a wider limit. On macOS 27, choose its category, such as Social Media.

  4. Set a short daily time, then confirm.

  5. Optional: turn on Lock Screen Time Settings so a passcode is needed to change it.

How do you block web.telegram.org with the hosts file?

Point the Telegram Web hostnames at an address that goes nowhere. Chrome reads the hosts file itself, and other browsers on this Mac that use the system resolver read it too. Safari follows it as well, unless iCloud Private Relay is on. Hosts entries do not support wildcards: each line covers one hostname only. Telegram Web opens at web.telegram.org, and the same clients also load at webk.telegram.org and weba.telegram.org (checked on 11 October 2026), so list all three. Leave telegram.org itself alone unless you want its help pages blocked too.

With iCloud Private Relay on, Safari sends its web requests through Apple's relays, so a hosts entry may not apply there; turn Private Relay off for Safari, then open the site to confirm it is blocked.

  • To unblock, open the file again, delete the lines and flush the cache again.
  • It is a permanent block with no timer, and anyone who knows the trick can reverse it. If the desktop app still connects, that is expected; block the app with App Limits or a focus app.
  1. Open Terminal and run:

    sudo nano /etc/hosts
  2. Enter your Mac password. Move to the bottom of the file and add:

    0.0.0.0 web.telegram.org
    0.0.0.0 webk.telegram.org
    0.0.0.0 weba.telegram.org
  3. Press Control-O, then Return to save, and Control-X to exit.

  4. Flush the DNS cache so the change applies now:

    sudo dscacheutil -flushcache
    sudo killall -HUP mDNSResponder
  5. Quit and reopen your browser, then open web.telegram.org and confirm it no longer loads. Quit and reopen the Telegram app and see whether it still connects.

Can Screen Time or your browser block web.telegram.org?

Screen Time has a web content restriction (System Settings, Screen Time, Content & Privacy, App Store, Media, Web & Games, Limit Adult Websites, Customize) where you add https://web.telegram.org, https://webk.telegram.org and https://weba.telegram.org to the Restricted list. It is aimed at Safari, so test other browsers.

Neither Safari nor Chrome has a built-in website blocklist for personal use. Chrome relies on extensions or system-level blocks. An extension affects only its own browser. Step-by-step options are in the Chrome guide and the Safari guide. For the general method, see how to block websites on a Mac.

How do you block Telegram on your iPhone too?

Use Screen Time on the iPhone. A block on your Mac does not carry over to the phone, and Nudge is a Mac app only. Telegram is a cloud-based messenger, so messages sent while the Mac is blocked still wait in your account. Menu names differ slightly between iOS versions.

  1. On the iPhone, open Settings and tap Screen Time.

  2. Tap App Limits, add Telegram and set a time allowance.

  3. Optional: tap Content & Privacy Restrictions, then App Store, Media, Web, & Games, then Web Content, then Limit Adult Websites, and under Never Allow add web.telegram.org.

How do you block Telegram only during work sessions?

Use a focus app that blocks apps as well as websites, so Telegram is shut while you work and reachable after. Add the Telegram app and the Telegram Web addresses to a Nudge preset and start the session from the menu bar. Nudge blocks the apps and websites you picked while the session runs, and websites are blocked in Safari and Chrome. Nudge does not block or silence notifications.

  • Telegram is blocked on the Mac while you work and reachable after the session ends. Nudge costs $9.99 once for Lifetime Access, with no subscription, and every Mac gets a 7-day free trial that needs no email, password or card.
  • To compare other tools, read the best website blocker apps for Mac and app blocker vs website blocker. The same approach works for chat apps such as Discord.
  1. Open Nudge and create a preset, such as Deep Work.

  2. Add each Telegram app you have installed (Telegram, Telegram Desktop or Telegram Lite) to the apps to block, and web.telegram.org, webk.telegram.org and weba.telegram.org to the websites to block.

  3. Start the preset from the menu bar, or use Quick Focus for a one-off session.

  4. Optional: add a schedule so the preset runs on the days and hours you choose.

FAQ

How do I block the Telegram app on a Mac?

Set an App Limit for Telegram in System Settings, Screen Time, or add the Telegram app to a Nudge preset so it is blocked during sessions. A hosts file or browser extension blocks the website, and does not reliably stop the desktop app.

How do I block web.telegram.org on a Mac?

Add web.telegram.org, webk.telegram.org and weba.telegram.org to the hosts file in Terminal and flush the DNS cache, or add the same three addresses to a Nudge preset, which blocks websites in Safari and Chrome during a session.

Does Screen Time block the Telegram desktop app?

It can limit it. An App Limit caps daily time in the app, and a passcode stops easy changes. It limits time; it does not switch the app off at the start of a work session. Labels vary between macOS versions.

Will blocking web.telegram.org in the hosts file stop the desktop app?

Do not count on it. The app and the website are separate, and Telegram does not publish every hostname the apps use. Block the app with App Limits or a focus app, and use the hosts file for the website.

Does blocking Telegram on my Mac block it on my iPhone?

No. A Mac block applies to that Mac. For the phone, use Screen Time on iPhone or another phone app such as Freedom, Opal or Session. Nudge is a Mac app and does not block phones.

Can Nudge block Telegram only during work hours?

Yes. Add the Telegram app and the Telegram Web addresses to a preset and run it from the menu bar, or use a schedule to run the preset on the days and hours you choose.

Turn the guide into a focus session

Pick the apps and websites that pull you away and start the session from the menu bar. They stay blocked until it ends. $9.99 once after 7 days free, no card to start.
